About:
Coach House Sounds is an internet-based project documenting the diverse Chicago music scene by inviting local (and some visiting) musicians to be recorded while performing in an intimate setting. By using a tape-based workflow, live production, and single takes, we create an organic atmosphere where the creative process can thrive, whether it's coming from a setlist, trying out a new song, or pure improvisation.
History:
In 2008, with the growing popularity of independent recording sites, Matt Baron had the idea to try a project based on the Chicago music scene. He partnered with audio engineer Doug Leinen and artist/designer Neal Morrison to create a different approach toward recording sessions on the internet. By focusing on a tape-based workflow (both in terms of the analog audio production and later, digital video production), CHS would provide a linear, album-based alternative to the short, fragmented musical experiences already available on many music sites. By sticking to the basics, focusing primarily on the local music scene, and taking advantage of the tools provided by internet distribution, CHS began to share the organic quality of live music and the united feel of Chicago's creative community with the world.
In early 2010, independent filmmaker Michael Mayer joined the team to provide video support and CHS began to curate and document sold-out live shows at multiple local venues. By documenting each performance with audio, video, and still photography, CHS sessions grew to make as complete a creative experience as possible, while still maintaining roots in an independent, stripped-down, D.I.Y. philosophy. Approaching its 100th session, CHS endures as a continuing document of the energetic creative spirit present in the Chicago music scene.
