According to Mars, our recording with him, Paal and Kent was the first time these three renowned improvisers have ever performed together as a trio. After they got situated with their instruments and some espresso, Doug rolled the tape and captured three pieces in which the guys were basically going full throttle the whole time. The week of January 3, 2011 consisted of a burst of activity for Mars, Paal and Kent. Besides the recording with us on January 4th, they played a show for the Immediate Sound Series at the Hideout on January 5, did another recording later that week, a show in Madison, and maybe even one more show someplace else... They were joking about how anytime you have more than one show in a week in two different cities, then it's technically a tour... I wish they had printed a t-shirt for it. We're glad to have served as the lab where the trio was able to get their initial bearings, though they could have fooled us considering their chemistry was mighty, fluid and comfortable.
