I first saw Tyler Jon Tyler perform at a little bar in Austin as part of the Trouble in Mind SXSW showcase. I had seen their name on show listings in Chicago for quite some time, and find it funny that it took a 19-hour drive to finally see them play. The first thing that I loved about this band was their bass lines. I heard a review lately that said if you what you love most about a record (or band) is their bass lines, then you’re in trouble. That’s not the case at all with TJT; their vocal melodies are sticky (especially on New England Street) and the musicians have a knack to blend each song’s minimal parts seamlessly. Tyler blew through 11 songs in about thirty minutes. Sessions like this are what make we less inclined to go out and see live shows at midnight on a Thursday, and perhaps even avoid another hellish drive to Austin next year.
