Jessica Risker is a Chicago-based musician who fronts a band called Absinthe & the Dirty Floors; she also moonlights under the moniker Deadbeat. A few of my favorite things about Deadbeat: she consistently makes the best show posters (go to her Facebook page to see them), her live solo performances incorporate song intros via an old tape recorder with recordings of her voice slowed down that’s equally creepy and endearing, and her songs don’t sound anything like I thought they would upon hearing “Deadbeat.” Cryptic, creative, and catchy, Deadbeat’s music and aura defy her misleading name. Which is maybe my favorite part of all.
